The Gospel

Tim Keller states:

“The gospel is this: We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope.”

IN JESUS’ WORK ON THE CROSS, GOD ACCOMPLISHED WHAT HUMANKIND NEVER COULD. We were alienated from our Maker, and the gap was eternity. But God’s response was not to leave us on our own. He instead stepped out of Heaven and into human history, reclaiming the hearts of his people through his perfect life, death, and resurrection.

CHRISTIANITY DOESN’T MAKE BAD PEOPLE GOOD; IT MAKES DEAD PEOPLE ALIVE. It is not about earning our way back onto the nice list. It is not about following a set of rules or being a good person:

It’s about glorifying, knowing, and enjoying Jesus.

IT’S THE ENJOYMENT OF THE GOSPEL THAT COLORS ALL OUR ACTION. How we work, how we parent, how we study, and how we relax are shaped by the finished work of Jesus Christ. We don’t submit to God out of duty; we submit to him in pursuit of his fame and our deepest satisfaction.

RESPOND TO THE GOSPEL. God’s call to us is this: respond to his mercy through repentance and faith. To repent, simply means “to turn”. To turn from your own lordship and to trust the Lordship of Jesus. To exercise faith, simply means “to trust”. Believe that Jesus, the kind creator of the world, gives you his perfect standing before God the Father.

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” -Jesus
