Boomers: It’s not just a random person
Sometimes on social media, someone will make a derogatory comment towards another generation. Often, these comments are aimed at two generations: Boomers and Millennials. However, in both cases, the comments assume basic facts about these generations that are not true. Instead of creating false beliefs about another generation, the Bible calls for us to live inter-generational lives.
As we look at the major generations that are present in our community today, Baby Boomers, or Boomers are our next generation. As a reminder, the information here is general and does not perfectly describe every member of this generation.
Boomers as a whole were born between 1946-1966. The dates of this generation can vary slightly. Modern Boomers have had long careers and are retired, or are beginning to move in that direction. Culture has changed quite a bit since Boomers first were born. Boomers witnessed things such as the Moon Landing, the Cold War, and for some of the more senior Boomers, the Vietnam War. In addition, Boomers witnessed technological advances en masse.
The average Boomer according to James Choung, a VP of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, lives a life that is based on truth. Boomers are heavily swayed by truth and they want to know what the facts and the evidence say. For a Boomer who is not a Christian, we want to be prepared to discuss apologetics and the facts behind things such as why the Bible is true and reliable.
As we consider how different generations fit together, I want us to focus on this “truth” part of working with someone from the Baby Boomer generation. Whether it is a believer or not, truth is held in high regard. As we seek to walk with Baby Boomers, we want to make sure that we are presenting the truth, whether about the Bible or life, and that we are quick to present facts.
One of the strengths that Baby Boomers bring to discipleship is their focus on truth and on God’s Word. Discipleship should always begin and end with God’s Word and this generation does a great job of helping others to see the truth that God has given us. If you are being discipled by a Baby Boomer expect to grow in an understanding of God’s Word.
Although Baby Boomers can be seen negatively on social media, Baby Boomers are core to what God is doing in America today. Their emphasis on truth and understanding God’s Word is important to have in the Church. We must work with Baby Boomers to support them as they follow God each day.
